Video game ramble.
It occurs to me that there are people on the friends list who may or may not want to read an opinion about Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales for the DS. Considering I bought it last Friday and played it until I went crazy, I have an opinion, so.

Well, for starters, the game layout is incredibly cute. You run around your farm and the surrounding areas and then the actual gaming part takes place in pop-up story books with altered childhood stories (e.g. The Adamantoise and the Cactuar instead of The Tortoise and the Hare). Battles are done as a card game and you collect cards mostly by making certain goals in the story books or in various microgames (since the storybook games are called minigames).

So, basically, the entire game is minigames, other minigames, and a few card battles here and there. Everything is done with the stylus, too (besides the few minigames that involve blowing into the microphone which, by the way, are hard on the cheeks after twenty minutes or so). For the record, the reason I went crazy is because I'm not so brilliant at minigames, but also have completionist issues. >> But there are seriously a couple of games that I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT MANAGE. It's pretty horrid.

Another good point is the music. It incorperates songs from different games in the Final Fantasy series. For example, when you walk into the houses, it plays the town theme from the first Final Fantasy, boss battles are the boss music from FFVI, and at the tower I'm currently at, it's got that one really weird song from FFVII that I think is from one of those Shinra reactors (but I don't really remember because it's been so long since I played). There's others, such as the forest music, but I don't actually remember the song it's referencing right now because, well, I'm listening to the chocobo theme (which is, of course, included).

Anyway, while the storybook thing is actually kind of clever, especially since each volume has three different endings, the story is not so deep or engaging. You know, same old save the world thing and some evil chick with a *gaspu* tragic past. Seriously, no one saw that coming. But it's entertaining, and light-hearted which is good for a DS game (as opposed to a console game where you actually sit down, generally for a good chunk of time), I suppose.

And I guess that's it. So, if you have any particular questions, let me know and I'll answer as best I can without spoiling too much (unless you want otherwise). ♥

Why can't the villian have a happy-go-lucky past for a change? So full of joy and sweetness that it caused their brains to melt, making them evil.

Hm. I should probably cut back on the drugs a bit after thinking that up.

Maybe they should have a villan who's only evil when they're on a sugar low! But have them be perfectly great when they are full of cakes and candy but then have their pastry chef get kidnapped which convinces them to take over the world so that they have control of ALL pastry chefs ... or something. XD;

That sounds really interesting and makes me want to get it now. I saw it for sale at the shop last weekend, but being broke and already addicted to Puzzle Quest for the DS and Tales of the Abyss for the PS 2, I decided to hold off on Chocobo Tales for a bit.

But it definitely sounds like a game that I will eventually pick up. I love mini games too. The only thing stopping me right now is the hefty price tag. It's one of the most expensive games in the shop and knowing that its a Squareenix game means the price probably won't come down. *pouts*

Maybe wait until it shows up used? >> It might take a while, though. Alas that Puzzle Quest was not that interesting to me when I tried the PC demo, but I bought a used copy of TotA at the same time I bought Chocobo Tales. >> I turned in Shining Force EXA for it, and I'm actually really glad, even though I suck horribly at action games.

The next one I'm going to get is Cake Mania. XD; Mwahaha.

I rarely see Square games for the DS turn up used. But I have Chocobo Tales on my "to get" list, which I'm going to restrict myself to one game a month. At least that way I can try to save some money.

I have to say that one of the things that grabbed me about Tales of the Abyss is the OST. It's really beautiful. Plotwise, its also very solid. The fighting was a bit scary at first since it involves button mashing, but after levelling up and acquiring a full party of four, I ended up having tonnes of fun fighting. I still have trouble at boss fights but its manageable.

Cake Mania is such a japanese game but I hear its really fun.

This is true. In fact, I rarely see ANY game I want for the DS used. But today I did pick up Lunar: Dragon Song for less than $15, so I'm happy. ♥

I was a lot more fond of Suikoden V's soundtrack. I really like the opening theme to TotA, but the various town and dungeon tracks don't grab me nearly as much. And for some reason, I don't get world music unless I've left someplace, so if I load the game on the map, I have no music. Which is annoying.

And the battle system is still kicking my butt pretty hard. I keep considering just putting it on auto and hoping the machine is smarter than I am.

Well, I'd get it if I could FIND it, but apparently it is still obscure to this town. Oh well. I shall patiently wait.

I thought the battle system for Tales would be hard for me since I suck at button mashing. But after a while it got pretty good (especially after I beat some hard bosses, hehehehe). It really helps to have a full party of four fighting together. Took me ages to realise that I could manually set the spells for the backup spellcasters to cast. Once I figured that out, tough battles went much easier.

I couldn't get very far with Suikoden V even though I was impressed by how pretty it was. The loading times sucked, and the huge maps made me so confused, I got lost all the time. I really hate that. ~_~

I hadn't heard very much good about Lunar: Dragon Song. A lot of reviews said the battle system was awkward. And you lose hp while running. WTF?

I just build levels until I don't have to do much more than press the x button in regular fights. >> It's maybe lazy, but it works, so. And for the most part I don't even know what the other characters' skills do or which are useful, so I just let them all be usable.

The loading times didn't really bother me, but then, I played a lot of that game while doing homework. XD And, really, the TotA map gives me more grief than did the Suiko5 map. >> Must be a personal preference thing.

I obviously did not do my homework on the Lunar: Dragon Song thing because I simply went off of me liking Lunar: Silver Star Story and Lunar: Eternal Blue. This was foolish on my part because, yes, the running thing bites so hard and the battle system is ridiculous. You can tell it to fight, but you can't pick which monster to attack, so of course the AI always picks the wrong one. And there are two modes to getting into battles. One allows you to get only items from monsters, and one allows you to get only experience. You can never get both, and you never get money. To get money, you have to either take and complete jobs or sell the items from the monsters, and often the jobs involve collecting stuff from the monsters and delivering it, so you can't just sell everything you find. AND some of the monsters can steal the stuff back but won't return it once you kill them which is also fairly frustrating. I ... honestly have got to say you should avoid it, though I'm disappointed about that. I may still play it just to see if it gets better, but it's more stress than fun. -.-
