It occurs to me that there are people on the friends list who may or may not want to read an opinion about Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales for the DS. Considering I bought it last Friday and played it until I went crazy, I have an opinion, so.
Well, for starters, the game layout is incredibly cute. You run around your farm and the surrounding areas and then the actual gaming part takes place in pop-up story books with altered childhood stories (e.g. The Adamantoise and the Cactuar instead of The Tortoise and the Hare). Battles are done as a card game and you collect cards mostly by making certain goals in the story books or in various microgames (since the storybook games are called minigames).
So, basically, the entire game is minigames, other minigames, and a few card battles here and there. Everything is done with the stylus, too (besides the few minigames that involve blowing into the microphone which, by the way, are hard on the cheeks after twenty minutes or so). For the record, the reason I went crazy is because I'm not so brilliant at minigames, but also have completionist issues. >> But there are seriously a couple of games that I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT MANAGE. It's pretty horrid.
Another good point is the music. It incorperates songs from different games in the Final Fantasy series. For example, when you walk into the houses, it plays the town theme from the first Final Fantasy, boss battles are the boss music from FFVI, and at the tower I'm currently at, it's got that one really weird song from FFVII that I think is from one of those Shinra reactors (but I don't really remember because it's been so long since I played). There's others, such as the forest music, but I don't actually remember the song it's referencing right now because, well, I'm listening to the chocobo theme (which is, of course, included).
Anyway, while the storybook thing is actually kind of clever, especially since each volume has three different endings, the story is not so deep or engaging. You know, same old save the world thing and some evil chick with a *gaspu* tragic past. Seriously, no one saw that coming. But it's entertaining, and light-hearted which is good for a DS game (as opposed to a console game where you actually sit down, generally for a good chunk of time), I suppose.
And I guess that's it. So, if you have any particular questions, let me know and I'll answer as best I can without spoiling too much (unless you want otherwise). ♥
